Different types of foods play specific roles within your body. Keeping track of what, when, and how much you eat—combined with regular glucose tracking—helps you and your healthcare team clearly see how different meals affect your blood sugar patterns.
The 3-Day Food Diary Experiment
As you develop a sustainable meal plan, it helps to start with what you already baseline enjoy. Try tracking everything you eat and drink for three consecutive days. Once completed, review the list with your dietitian and ask yourself the following questions:
- What are my favorite foods that I want to make sure are safely integrated into my plan?
- Do I have certain "problem foods" that disrupt my blood sugar or that are difficult to eat in moderation?
- What do my actual portion sizes look like compared to standard serving sizes?
- How are my meals spaced throughout the day?
- Is there a specific time of day (such as late evening) when it is most difficult for me to follow my nutritional goals?
Timing Your Meals
In the past, people with diabetes were often told they must eat strict meals every 4 to 5 hours. Today, nutrition plans are highly individualized.1
While eating at regular intervals can prevent extreme hunger and subsequent overeating, your exact timing depends on your lifestyle and your medication regimen. For instance, modern long-acting basal insulins and non-insulin medications offer far greater scheduling flexibility than older diabetes therapies. Speak with your team to find the exact rhythm that works for your body.
What to Do If Your Blood Sugar Is High Before a Meal
If you check your blood sugar before sit-down dining and find it is elevated, your strategy should be determined by your specific care plan rather than simply skipping or delaying the meal:2
If you take rapid-acting insulin: Your doctor will likely have taught you to calculate a "correction dose" (or bolus) based on your Insulin Sensitivity Factor (ISF). You may also be advised to extend your "pre-bolus" time—waiting 15 to 20 minutes after taking your insulin before eating—to give the medication a head start against the high reading.
If you do not take insulin: Delaying your meal for hours can disrupt your routine and cause your liver to release even more stored glucose. Instead, consider altering the composition of the meal itself—focusing on lean proteins and non-starchy, fiber-rich vegetables while reducing simple carbohydrates—and drink plenty of water to help your kidneys flush out the excess sugar.
Always consult your diabetes care provider to establish specific protocols for unexpected pre-meal numbers.
